ISSUE 11 features fine artist and fashion designer Kyriaki Costa,
with her latest collection ‘Sweet Rock’, we also introduce recent
paintings by Israeli artist Nitsan David Hammerman, and
profile Lefkosia based designer Yianna Christoforou.
We are excited to be presenting the results of a project by Belfast architecture
graduate Claire Aiken whose senior thesis brought her
to Cyprus last year with the brief of designing an independent academy
of art for Cyprus. Nic Costa reveals all about ‘Idiosynchronism’,
the growing radical movement that he recently founded; Elena Stylianou
looks at the artist’s fascination in the abject - from Hans Bellmer to
Mona Hatoum and Cindy Sherman; and Eve Gogdell interviews
artist and author Henry L. Jones.
Finally we visit two important contemporary exhibitions on this autumn
at PCCA & Rouan Gallery; and publish the last in our
series of translated short stories, initiated by Maria Ioannou’s ‘Writers
Chain Project’, this time with contributions from Alaa’Abu
Karaki & Aliaa Abdel Aziz Dawoud and
Luciana Grosu.

ISSUE 9 'New Photography : Seeing through the Socio-Anthropological Lens'
In this special edition we feature work submitted by eleven Cypriot and
Cyprus based artists following ARTERI’s New Photography call. We received
a positively extraordinary range of styles and ideas, from practising
and emerging photographers to nonprofessional artists. The challenging
final selection leaned towards images created as part of a series and
those exploring the relationship of people and objects with / within their
environments. Theopisti Stylianou Lambert, initiator and co-editor of
the issue, introduces the selected artists, Haris Pellapaisiotis talks
on documentary photography, and Nic Costa reviews three popular socio-anthropological
photographers. We also present American New Photographer Steven Day and
his ‘Cranbrook Estate’ urban series that documents the people and environment
of the housing estate which notoriously hosted the filming of comedy show
‘Little Britain’. On page 67 you will find an indispensible guide to photography
organisations and resources, as well as a list of motivating websites
for news, competitions and exhibitions. And finally we introduce the next
two short stories, by Eleni Skarpari and Elizaveta Sivakov, in the ‘Writer’s
Chain Project’ series.

ISSUE 8 'death + resurgence'
We were living in the belief that we had both a past and a future.
But ‘the past does not pass’, it has become a monster, so much so that
we do not mention it anymore... and the future is severely questionned
by the issue of the environment... So the only place left for us to inhabit
is the present. But as the writer Octavio Paz said: “you cannot live in
the present moment, just as you cannot live in the future”- Paul
Virilio “Le Monde” Interview 10/2008
A particular darkness dominates this closing 2008 issue, however the message
isn’t necessarily fearful but one of retrospect and resurgence. As we
find ourselves becoming trapped in the present, as if stuck on PAUSE and
unable to PLAY -past and future blurring- our instinct is to REWIND or
FAST FORWARD... We feed off history, nature and technology, to create
safe parallel dimensions in which to exist and re-root ourselves.
ARTERI 8 presents jewellery design by Liana Pattihis, Yianna Georgiou,
Seth Mehl, and Savvas Koureas; we feature Italian artist and critic Francesco
Spampinato, who also contributes an exclusive review on the work of contemporary
artist Alessandro Roma, plus Elena Stylianou on Francis Bacon and a survey
of Death in contemporary art from Nic Costa. We cover the launch of a
new Lemesos based photo exhibition that pays homage to the sea and those
who successfully capture it, and a tour of the Pharos=Ten exhibition with
Garo Keheyan gives us insight into the founder’s vision. Also, introducing
‘Notes From A Lizard’, a new socio-political column that kicks off with
a few cautionary observations on the darker side of the police force.
Finally, ARTERI is excited to present a fresh literary initiative by Maria
Ioannou -‘The Writer’s Chain Project’- through a series of short stories,
on the opening theme ‘a room / a window / a matchbox’, being featured
in this and the following 3 issues...

ISSUE 7 'traversing the fantasy'
What drives us to behave ‘rationally’ or ‘irrationally’, to express or
conceal our emotions, to ascertain judgement? What drives a whole race
to evolve into an un-natural state of being, incompatible with its very
own environment, and to the point of self-obliteration? Individual desires
and interpretation determine our motivations but upbringing and social
conditioning/expectations -generating intense contradictory emotions-
govern our actions and how these are perceived by others. The contemporary
jumble of mixed messages and priorities is overwhelming our natural born
instincts with a confused compulsion to disguise, evade and displace ourselves...
Issue 7 draws a diverse group of artists concerned with social behaviour
and consequence, the will to destruct in order to reconstruct, inexplicable
and absurd situations created out of desperate or ‘misdirected’ drive,
manipulating negative or past experience to induce new energy, faith in
conviction, trusting intuition, “traversing the fantasy”...

ISSUE 6 'fantasy + reality'
“There are no rules..”
If there was anything significant gained from art school it came out of
this simple yet loaded statement, my most memorable moment of didactic
guidance. To achieve your true potential and innovate as an artist is
to disregard convention and follow your creative instinct, even if it
appears to conflict with what you have previously learned. Art is about
following dreams, believing anything is possible and sometimes taking
risks in order to turn them into a reality - if you can imagine it then
it can exist. This issue presents art that flirts with the boundaries
of reality and the imagination, creating fantasy out of reality and vice
versa. We feature product designer Meric Kara, fine artist Demetris Neokleous
and photographer Haris Artemis. Theopisti and Sheridan Lambert’s collaborative
photo-documentary (part 1) creates an eerie encounter with a series of
neglected mannequin(akin, ikin) figures around old Lefkosia. Kadir Kaba
talks about his research on the second Turkish Cypriot photographic studio
‘Foto Necdet’. Maria Efstathiou interviews Stockholm based artist-curator
Hoang Nguyen, Nic Costa reveals the reality behind the ‘Disumbrationism’
art movement and Tatiana Ferahian reviews Christina Papakyriakou’s surreal
series ‘The Keyhole’. We are also excited to be including work by Ioanna
Philippou, Greg Sodergren and three creative writers - with the timely
short story ‘Ledra Street’ by established poet Nora Nadjarian, ‘Prepare
for Battle’ by upcoming writer Mateo Jarrín Cuvi, and extracts from the
theatrical script ‘Platforms’ - a work in progress by Maria Ioannou..

ISSUE 5 'body'
ARTERI invites you to celebrate its first anniversary with a special edition
issue and complimentary DVD of films by award-winning and upcoming Cypriot
filmmakers. It includes shorts produced in Cyprus, UK & USA that have
featured or premiered over 2006/2007 at local and international festivals.
From comedy, drama and experimental to unpretentious, heart-felt documentary,
each film uncovers a piece of the puzzling Cypriot condition. A subtle
reflection of the deeprooted, often conflicting, feelings that result
from migration and fear of the different or the new. Issue 5 marks a challenging
but successful and promising first year, it features fresh, exciting content
by artists whose work uses or explores the human body... its role, its
perceptions, its value in contemporary society. Presenting conceptual
artists Maria Lianou and Sarah Misselbrook, photographer Giray Karahasan;
and interviews with ‘Stelarc’ and Tattoo artist Paris Pierides.

ISSUE 4 'environment & well being'
While Cyprus is only just being introduced to the ‘idea’ of recycling,
with the average Cypriot still using at least 365 plastic bags a year,
in other parts of Europe people are questioning the seemingly ineffectual
recycling of domestic waste which accounts for just a tiny percentage
of emissions. ‘Recycling’ for many has become a PC fashion statement,
offering a painless way to show they are ‘doing their bit’ without having
to make any significant lifestyle changes, like quitting driving, flying
less, and most effective - boycotting the industries who produce the waste
in the first place.
What we are presented with is not an environmental problem but more urgently
a social and psychological one, a distorted sense of priorities and denial
of the bigger picture through trivial distraction. As we face an increasingly
uncertain future, in which money and conflicts become meaningless, artists
more than ever have a responsibility to communicate health issues, using
environmentally friendly methods and materıals in the process.
Now is an opportunity for us all, not only ‘artists’, to access our inherent
creativity and start improvising in our daily lives.
Our health and the state of the environment are inextricably linked so
by looking out for our health - not relying on machines or harmful chemicals
and not always opting for the quicker, easier solution, but taking the
time to do things for ourselves - we instantly win back a sense of self
worth, the respect we have lost for our environment and our children,
and ultimately regain the will to effect change...

ISSUE 3 ‘Crazy artist’ is a common stereotype artists have to deal with.
The fact is that people are afraid of ‘different’, and artists who perform
bizarre acts or work in unusual ways, typically with intent to shock or
question the norm, effectively use this difference to capture our attention
and affect societal change, for better or worse. Issue 3 focuses on 'alternative'
art and artists... The summer edition also presents some of Cyprus' recent
graduates and emerging professionals from local and UK colleges. Featuring
- [gallery] Angela Leonidou Photography graduate (Cyprus-UK / University
College for the Creative Arts). Maxim Fon Volff-Kiselev Russian Orthodox
fine artist (Berlin). Chryssanthy Kofidou Set & costume designer (Greece/UK).
[articles] an interview with 'TOPRAK' on his ritual style performance
and site-specific work, by Sheridan Lambert. 'The Anarchists' by Michael
Paraskos, on the collaborative paintings of Votsis and Paraskos… Chris
Bors and Ketta Ioannidou on their fake 'Triton Gallery'… 'Wanted for Murder'
- a review of film and performance art, by Nic Costa, plus 'Ce n'est pas
une Revolte, c'est une Revolution' - a sum up of the local alternative
music scene, by Yiannos Ashiotis… [exhibition review] ‘Myths & Archetypes
in the Mediterranean - A Summer Exhibition’ by Theopisti Stylianou-Lambert.
[profiles] Mustafa Aslanturk London based Cypriot designer (London College
of Fashion). [notes from abroad] A Day at the Whitechapel by Nineta Avani
(Intern and postgraduate in Arts Management - City University, London).
